Intent, Implementation, Impact Statement

At St Thomas, we believe that Maths is essential to everyday life. We understand the importance of providing a curriculum which caters for the needs of all individuals and sets them up with the necessary skills and knowledge for them to become successful in their futures. We intend to give each child the self-confidence and resilience to reach their full potential by ensuring that they have the tools to calculate fluently, reason logically, problem solve and think in abstract ways.

Intent – what are we trying to achieve?

Children become confident, competent and independent mathematicians.

· Children become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics.

· Children are able to develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly.

· To build upon children’s knowledge and understanding from Reception to Year 6.

· Children are able to reason mathematically; following a line of enquiry, identifying relationships, making justifications and using mathematical language.

· Children can solve problems by applying their mathematical understanding to a variety of increasingly complex problems.

· Children are prepared to persevere when faced with challenges and embrace the value of learning from mistakes.

Implementation – what does Maths look like at St Thomas?

· Children study Mathematics daily, following the ‘White Rose Maths’ scheme. This is a whole school primary maths curriculum that creates continuity and progression in the teaching of mathematics.

· Incorporate the ‘5 big ideas’ into lessons, with opportunities for revisiting prior knowledge, fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

· Provide appropriate, quality equipment for each area of the curriculum to support conceptual understanding and to make links across topics.

· Teachers regularly use assistive technology, such as LBQ (Learning By Questions), which provides instant feedback to both the pupil and teacher.

· Have working displays that include key vocabulary in every classroom. This should be updated regularly.

· Teaching is adaptive to ensure there is appropriate challenge for all learners.

· Arithmetic quizzes are completed at least once a week in each year group to help with fluency and the rapid recall of facts.

· Summative assessments are completed on a termly basis.

Impact – how does this effect our school?

Consistent approaches and development of concepts across the whole school means that:

· Children will become more resilient and independent learners, with the skills and knowledge to tackle problems which are relevant to real life scenarios.

· Children will be able to reason mathematically, justifying or proving methods using mathematical language and conducting mathematical enquiries.

· Children will have a broad knowledge of the different curriculum areas in mathematics.

· Children will have an understanding of the relationship between mathematics and other subject areas.

· Children will have an understanding of how mathematics is used within the wider world.
